The authors of the popular YouTube channel Gamers Nexus have published an independent review of the GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card.
The main focus of their review was on tests conducted in modern games with Full HD, Quad HD, and Ultra HD resolutions. Details about the test setup and full testing methodology can be found on the official Gamers Nexus website.
Performance in Games
First, the experts tested the new card in Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail at 4K resolution. The RTX 5090 was 31% faster than the RTX 4090 and nearly 75% more powerful than the Radeon RX 7900 XTX.
At 1440p, the gap between the RTX 5090 and RTX 4090 narrows to 17%, while the new NVIDIA flagship outperformed the Radeon RX 7900 XTX by 50%.
In 1080p, the RTX 5090 had an 8.5% advantage over the RTX 4090, and the Radeon RX 7900 XTX lagged behind NVIDIA’s new flagship by 27%.
The next game tested was Black Myth: Wukong, where the RTX 5090 surpassed its predecessor by 20–28%, depending on the resolution. The performance difference between the RTX 5090 and RX 7900 XTX ranged from 36% to 75%.
A significant FPS increase over the previous generation was observed in Dragon's Dogma 2 at 4K resolution. Here, the RTX 5090 outperformed NVIDIA’s previous flagship by 35%, while its lead over the Radeon RX 7900 XTX reached 73%.
A similar situation was seen in Dying Light 2 at 4K resolution, where the RTX 5090 was 39% faster than the RTX 4090 and almost 75% ahead of the Radeon RX 7900 XTX.
The biggest gap between the RTX 5090 and RTX 4090 was observed in Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K resolution. The new card was approximately 50% faster than its predecessor and 66% faster than the Radeon RX 7900 XTX.
In Resident Evil 4 Remake at 4K resolution, the RTX 5090 demonstrated a 37% advantage over the RTX 4090 and a 64% lead over the Radeon RX 7900 XTX.
Ray Tracing Tests
The reviewers also conducted several tests in games with ray tracing enabled. When playing at Ultra HD resolution, the RTX 5090 outperformed the RTX 4090 by approximately 30–40%.
Power Efficiency
The experts evaluated the power efficiency of the new card. At idle, it consumes around 46 watts, one of the highest figures in recent years. However, it maintains decent efficiency in terms of "FPS per watt," competing with the GeForce RTX 4060 and GeForce RTX 4060 Ti.
Final Verdict
In conclusion, the reviewers noted that the real performance increase of the GeForce RTX 5090 compared to the GeForce RTX 4090 falls short of NVIDIA’s initial marketing claims. They pointed out that NVIDIA attempted to mislead users by presenting charts showing a twofold performance increase. However, without DLSS, the performance difference between the two flagships is only about 30%.
